. they're two very different things. nra members want commonsense gun laws. the washington leadership fights very hard against them. you're going to see that rift widening after today's weird performance. >> here's a bit what was he said from his news conference today, wayne lapierre. i called congress to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation and to do it now to make sure that blanket safety is in place when our kids return to school in january. is there any research or evidence that in fact arming security guards, arming teachers, arming administrators, would be an effective solution here? >> no. there's no research that says that putting more firearms in the hands of trained or untrained professionals in a shoot-out is going to make anybody who's sitting around safer. but there's lots of evidence that it won't. let me tell you a couple things. first of all, in my home state of colorado, at columbine there was a deputy sheriff there, there was another security guard nearby, they were not able to stop wh

the national rifle association's opposition to any new gun laws, president obama insists an action is not an option when it comes to protecting children. while democrats and republicans are upset over the massacre in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some lawmakers came forward and expressed interest in introducing legislation about gun control, but i guess the question is will they really in the new year? >> reporter: it really -- the reaction, especially and even among republicans to the nra idea is sort of muted at best. it's not a lot of enthusiasm on capitol hill for the idea of the federal government stepping in and endorsing the idea of all schools having armed police officers. never mind funding it. listen to a couple of senators, starting with a republican. >> we had an armed guard in columbine. we had an assault ban. none of it worked. we're talking about preventing mass murder from nontraditional criminals. people who are not traditional criminals, who are

or anybody else for that matter. there is a law that goes into effect in ten days that raises taxes on millionaires, small businesses filing as millionaires and everybody else. boehner's bill tried to stop that for everybody else. offa lifeguard sees ten swimmers drowning off of his beach and can only reach nine of them to save them, it doesn't mean that he's drowned the tenth one. all in nonsense somehow boehner was trying to raise taxes is just that, nonsense. >> your point is if you are anti-tax, vote for this bill. >> he was trying to stop a massive tax increase and unfortunately, some of my colleagues didn't see it that way. >> how bad is it up there? americans look at what's happening in washington right now and want both sides to get to work. i know it can be very collegial up there but in these meetings behind closed doors, what's the atmosphere like? >> miguel, bad process creates bad policy. and what we're watching today is extraordinarily bad process. for example, the president is not supposed to be part of the negotiations of the legislative branch. he is a separate bran

in the virginia state house. he's proposed a new law for schools in his state which would mean arming teachers. now, i want to ask you this. good morning to you, sir. are you saying that teachers should be able to carry guns in school or be required to carry guns in school? >> no. you're overstating it. look at the situation. arm some teachers, arm some school personnel who voluntarily participate in this. one of the problems that you have is that when you have an area that's a gun-free zone, criminals don't pay attention to this. shootings which have occurred to 1950 to the present with one exception where there's three or more people killed have occurred in areas that are gun-free zones. that's the problem. i want people to be able to have after they receive equivalent law enforcement training which would take about four to eight weeks, the same training that a policeman would have. so if a policeman comes on to campus later, he knows somebody there who knows the building, who knows how to respond. first thing, who knows when ton brandish a gun. no, i'm not arming everybody. this is not cowb
